How to make green lemonade (and enjoy it) - Who's in for younger looking skin?

Green based vegetable juices, or green “lemonades”, are actually the top juices embraced by cleansing divas for glowing skin, shiny hair and a happy body. If you are new to juicing and looking for a juicer, I have (and recommend) one from Breville. Learn more here.

What is a green lemonade drink?

A green lemonade drink, is different from a green smoothie. A green lemonade juice is typically made in a juicer (rather than in a blender) and it is generally made with a combination of the following ingredients:

  1. A juicy “alkaline” vegetable – such as a cucumber (technically a fruit, but eaten as a vegetable), or a few stalks of celery
  2. A few dark leafy green leaves – such as kale, baby spinach, collard greens or chard
  3. A piece of fruit or a touch of a natural sweetener – such as an apple, a pear, an orange, a touch of honey or a dash of Stevia (a plant-based sweetener) twirled into the juice after its served
How to make green Lemonade

There is a little bit of an art to making a good mug of green lemonade. Here’s what you need to know about how to do it:

  1. Start with a good, “water-rich” base

To make green lemonade start with a good, water-rich green vegetable that you enjoy – such as a few stalks of celery or a cucumber. I recommend newbies to juicing embrace celery first, and then try a few slices of cucumber. For one small glass of green lemonade, consider starting out with 5-6 stalks of celery, or half of a medium cucumber.

  2. Choose a touch of sweetener – but not too much

The most popular sweetener in a green lemonade is an apple. However, some beauties like to use the juice from a fresh pear, a pineapple, an orange and sometimes even a grapefruit. Some gurus occasionally like to mix in a tablespoon of raw honey into their juice to add sweetness also. Low sugar fruit, including green apples, tend to be used in green lemonade recipes most often. Stevia is also popular and embraced by juicing beauties who are looking to steer clear of any sugars – including “natural” sugars from fruit. If you do use Stevia, keep in mind that is 300x sweetener than sugar, and you really only need 1/4 – 1/2 of a TEAspoon to really sweeten up a drink. I recommend adding Stevia to your juice in small increments until it tastes just right for you. Stevia has quite a polarizing effect on people – some beauties love it. Others don’t.

  3. Embrace a few dark leafy greens

Dark leafy greens, including spinach, kale, Swiss chard and collard greens, are the nutrient powerhouses of a good green lemonade drink. Dark leafy greens are loaded with vitamins and minerals that help with the awakening and releasing of body “crud.” Over time, beauties believe this “crud” can weigh on your energy, your mood and your youthful glow. To get started, I would recommend adding 1-2 leafy green leaves. Then consider building from there.

Other considerations

Once you have included the three main ingredients listed above, consider customizing your green lemonade. Some of my favorite additions to green lemonade juice are:

  • an inch of ginger (toss it right into your juicer, no need to peel it)
  • one lemon (quartered and tossed right into your juicer, I like to peel it)
  • a dash of cayenne pepper
